· Research proves that the electric field of electric vehicles does not threaten human health

December 04, 2022

According to foreign media reports, the most comprehensive study to date on electromagnetic safety of electric vehicles shows that the electromagnetic field strength of electric vehicles is far lower than the safety exposure level specified by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection.

The electromagnetic safety research project, funded by the European Union and involving seven scientists, believes that drivers and passengers in electric vehicles are as safe as those driving or riding hydrogen, gasoline or diesel-powered cars. No electric car exposes the occupants to electromagnetic fields that are above international safety standards. The researchers say that in fact, these magnetic fields are much lower than the recommended values.

The Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology, the largest independent research institution in Scandinavia, led and participated in the study. Kari Schjlberg-Henriksen, a physicist at the institute, said: "The impact of magnetic field exposure is of public concern. This topic often appears in the media. As the number of electric vehicles continues to increase, the significance of this project is very significant."

The goal of the research project is to establish a standardized method for measuring the electromagnetic field of electric vehicles and increasing public confidence in the safety of electric vehicles.

Acceptable safety limits for exposure to magnetic fields of different frequencies were developed by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. The researchers used eight different electric vehicles, including pure electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles, as well as two traditional gasoline vehicles and one diesel vehicle to study these vehicles. The level of the magnetic field within it is determined to determine if its intensity is close to the recommended human exposure limit; and a mannequin with a sensor on the head, chest and foot is used to obtain standard, comparable measurements.

They used real cars to measure both in the laboratory and in road tests. It was found that the highest value of the electric field of the electric vehicle appeared near the floor, around the battery itself and when the vehicle was started. In either case, the intensity of the magnetic field exposed to the electric vehicle is less than 20% of the recommended safety limit of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. The measurements obtained at the head are both below 2% of the limit.

The magnetic field strength measured in gasoline and diesel vehicles is about 10% of the limit. This shows that there is little difference between electric vehicles and gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Scientists believe that the electric field of electric vehicles is far below the limit and is within a safe enough range.
